Goomte tea estate in Kurseong seen has a total of 52 cases as of today and is turning into a hotspot. A mass rapid had taken place and out of 85 people tested 32 turned positive. 20 were already tested positive beforehand. It must be noted that few weeks ago Mahanadi had seen similar rise in COVID cases out of which two CoVid deaths were also reported at Mahanadi bazaar.
Mahanadi bazaar and Goomte tea estate are located very close to one another. But even so, the management of Goomtee tea estate didn't stop the manufacturing process and continued with the daily work. Workers went to pluck leaves and factory workers did the processing as usual.
And now it is reported from our local volunteers there that most of the factory workers have tested positive for COVID 19.
The most important problem in these tea gardens is that the workers are afraid to undergo testing and because of this, risks of spreading and medical complications leading to even death take place and which further leads to many health and social problems. It is a truth that the lack of awareness among the workers is one of the problems that is relevant in these tea gardens. Whatsapp forwards and fake, unscientific news travel to every doors thanks to 4G network.
However, looking at the rising cases and deaths in Mahanadi, it was the responsibility of the tea garden owner and the management of Goomtee to stop te garden functioning for some time and pay wages to the workers so that the contagion could have been stopped to some level. Isn't it ?
No, but instead the daily wage slavery system in these tea gardens compelled the workers to go to work and hence as a result we have 52 cases and counting here.
Even during the pandemic, the tea garden management and the owners are concerned with only production and hence workers life is at stake here.
But yeah who cares, right ?
Most of the people might not even read this.
